he Convent of Nossa Senhora da Esperança traces its origins to a 13th-century hermitage on the pine-forested slopes above Belmonte, birthplace of Pedro Álvares Cabral, and it was from this convent's chapel that the image of Our Lady of Hope made its way to Brazil with his 1500 expedition. Architect Luís Rebelo de Andrade led the conversion into a 24-room pousada, deploying stone, iron and wicker across the building. The former chapel is now a lounge, the sacristy a bar, and each room is named after a friar and has a private balcony facing Serra da Estrela.
