Architect Gonçalo Byrne converted the neoclassical building into a pousada in 2009, preserving the granite walls, stone staircases, azulejo-lined corridors and the cloister at its center, while adding a fourth floor set discreetly back from the facade. Three stone figures of Faith, Hope and Charity watch over the entrance from above.
