an Clemente Palace Venice is named for the private island it's built on, first settled in 1131 when a Venetian merchant funded a church and a hospice for pilgrims bound for the Holy Land. The complex became a monastery in 1432 under canons answering to Pope Eugene IV, and later spent time as a plague hospital during Venice's 1630 outbreak. The 12th-century church survives with its original Romanesque core, next to gardens that make up much of the rest of the island. No bridge or public ferry connects San Clemente to the city; every arrival comes by boat.
