Dorfhus Gupf

Appenzell, Switzerland

20 Rooms

Emil "Migg" Eberle has been quietly building something in the Appenzell hills since 1987, when he bought the old Gasthaus zum Gupf. In 2020, on the site of a 19th-century cotton weaving workshop next door, he and his wife Sila Zinsli opened the Dorfhus: a 20-room hotel whose Stickerstube event room keeps the embroidered ceiling from that textile past...

mil "Migg" Eberle has been quietly building something in the Appenzell hills since 1987, when he bought the old Gasthaus zum Gupf. In 2020, on the site of a 19th-century cotton weaving workshop next door, he and his wife Sila Zinsli opened the Dorfhus: a 20-room hotel whose Stickerstube event room keeps the embroidered ceiling from that textile past intact. Downstairs, Switzerland's only Magnothek stores 15,500 bottles with an electronic sommelier to locate them, and the kitchen runs one of just four Grillworks open-fire stations in the country. The rosehip motif, symbol of the house, turns up everywhere you look.
