he Engine 7 Firehouse was built in 1895 to protect Kendall Square's rapidly expanding industrial district, and after nearly a century of service it closed in 1993 and fell into serious disrepair. Local artist Charlotte Forsythe and developer Gerald Fandetti bought the building in 1999, restored its Queen Anne facade and two crumbling cupolas, one rebuilt by Fandetti's brother, and opened it as a boutique hotel in 2002. It remains the only 19th-century building standing in a neighborhood otherwise defined by MIT and the global tech industry.
