he Alcobaça Monastery was founded by Portugal's first king in the 12th century and its Gothic church holds the tombs of Pedro I and Inês de Castro, one of the great tragic love stories of Portuguese history. Using stone, wood, leather and concrete, Souto Moura stripped the cloister back to its bones and designed all the furniture himself, in collaboration with Siza Vieira. The indoor pool is carved into the former Cistercian monks' stables; the events hall was once the monastery's great library, ransacked by Napoleon's troops in 1811.
