outh Tyrol is home to more than its fair share of Europe’s finest modern mountain lodges, but even here, Chalet Purmontes stands out. In its basic silhouette it’s familiar enough, but in every ultra-luxe detail it’s something more than an ordinary chalet. Or, in one highly desirable way, less: all of this, from the glass-walled spa to the gourmet restaurant and even the stables and riding school, is in service of a mere five suites, with a maximum capacity of barely a dozen guests.

Each of the five suites is spacious and finely wrought, with one or two bedrooms; each one comes with its own heated private infinity pool and an indoor whirlpool. These threaten to make the spa superfluous, but it makes its case with a wide range of treatments and relaxation facilities. And the cuisine at Chalet Purmontes is serious, even by the high standards of a South Tyrolean mountain lodge; its gastronomic offering is supplemented by the restaurants at the chalet’s three sister hotels, one of which is within walking distance.
