ot long after the opening of Kyoto’s Maruyama Park, now the city’s most popular spot for cherry blossom viewing parties, a cigar magnate built a Western-style mansion between the pond and Yasaka Shrine. This Meiji-era villa functioned as a private guesthouse for years before it was turned into a luxurious boutique hotel, and stepping inside its elegant salons outfitted with antique chandeliers, marble fireplaces, and Art Deco-style stained glass panels, it’s easy to imagine foreign dignitaries and politicians clinking glasses. With its sophisticated mix of Chinese, Japanese, and French influences, Chourakukan is as ornate as ever, its rooms lined in rich wood paneling with fireplaces, Jacuzzi tubs, and large picture windows facing cedar forest or Mount Higashiyama. The afternoon tea service is a treat in all seasons, especially at tables with views of the surrounding trees in bloom — or changing color in fall, or covered in snow in winter.
