Safe to say Praia do Canal Nature Retreat is a cut above the majority of the hotels that opened during Portugal’s most recent tourism boom — its low-profile, somewhat austere modernist architecture lends some extra gravity to this tranquil escape. Inside, the rooms and suites are rescued from minimalism by warm textures, natural materials, and colorful crafts and textiles. Some units come with balconies, others with terraces, rooftop lounges, or plunge pools, and all of them face out into the verdant landscape of the nature reserve. An extensive spa and fitness program is present as a matter of course, and the main infinity pool is a stunner. Azeitona, the main restaurant, is joined by a casual poolside option as well as a swanky cocktail bar.
