irado Island, in southwestern Japan’s Nagasaki Prefecture, is a spectacular maritime escape, and Kikka Hirado is one of the most memorable ways to experience it. This is a thoroughly modern hotel that shows there’s more to Japanese hospitality than the ryokan tradition; with its five ultra-modern rooms and suites, its sauna and wellness area, and its local and seasonal restaurant, it’s a remarkably full-featured hotel in spite of its extremely small size.

This size, of course, reinforces both its sense of seclusion and the personal touch of its service. Meanwhile the rooms, with their vast sea-facing windows, bring guests in direct contact with nature. The restaurant, too, looks out over the water through full-length windows, and the wellness area’s deck invites further contemplation. From here the island’s unique cultural sites are close at hand, as is the city of Hirado.
