he verdant and artistically rich city of Maebashi is home to the utterly unique Shiroiya Hotel, housed in a 1970s-era concrete building redesigned by architect Sou Fujimoto, built on the site of a 300-year-old ryokan. This art-focused project is the brainchild of another noted creative — Hitoshi Tanaka, the Maebashi-born founder of the Japanese eyewear brand JINS — who conceived of the place as a “living room for the city” to be enjoyed by guests and residents alike.Art is everywhere: an original work hangs in each guest room, while the main tower’s façade features a mural by American artist Lawrence Weiner, Leandro Erlich’s striking “Lighting Pipes” installation is exhibited in the four-story atrium, and Hiroshi Sugimoto’s “Sea of Galilee, Golan” stands behind the reception desk. The newly built Green Tower, a whimsical structure inspired by the topography of the old riverbank, is an artwork in itself; also contained within the Green Tower is one of the three distinct sauna experiences available to Shiroiya’s guests.
Nor are the various culinary arts overlooked here. Shiroiya Hotel is home to a multitude of venues, including a tea room, a lounge café, a bakery and a fruit tart shop, as well as a speakeasy-style bar and a restaurant serving inventive French dishes crafted from local ingredients.
