As the name suggests, the Palácio Ludovice Wine Experience Hotel pays homage to its original owner and to the building’s later use as a headquarters for the Port Wine Institute.The result is bright and airy, with a smart mix of old — carefully preserved frescoes, exposed stone archways, blue-and-white tilework — and new, including a vertical garden in the courtyard atrium and custom wool carpets inspired by the vineyards of the Douro Valley. Rooms and suites are light-filled and elegant with Art Deco details, bespoke furnishings, and spacious bathrooms stocked with Caudalie products. Downstairs, the stylish Federico restaurant is framed by lush plants and art installations inspired by the architect’s passion for goldsmithing.
