The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel

New York’s Upper East Side is not exactly a boutique-hotel hotbed, at least traditionally, but this revamped century-old classic adds a measure of youthful style to a neighborhood better known for traditional luxury. The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel still looks conventionally glamorous from the street; this Art Deco edifice was a mid-century celebrity favorite. Inside, though, thanks to designer Martin Brudnizki, it’s been brought gracefully up to date, and is stylish in a way that’s respectful of its history even as it appeals to a new generation.

Rooms and suites number an even hundred, and they’re not just quietly chic but subtly luxurious as well, and surprisingly generously sized. The substantial en-suite comforts are augmented by a spa in partnership with Sisley Paris and a fitness studio that opens onto a patio for yoga. The Surrey’s restaurant and lounge, though open to the public, are a collaboration with Casa Tua, the members’ club with outposts in Miami, Paris, and Aspen; the Club, however, is for members only.
