And while it’s a classic, built (and staffed) in a style that feels like home to guests who’ve been staying here for decades, what it isn’t is old-fashioned — this is a hotel that’s continually, if subtly, reinvented itself to keep pace with the times.Take the rooms, which feel a touch more minimalist than one might expect from one of the leading lights of London hospitality. The suites expand not only in space but in their stylistic palette as well, thanks to a range of guest designers from John Heah and Robert Angell to Joyce Wang and André Fu. And while the signature suites are the most extravagantly luxurious accommodations, even the entry-level Superior rooms come with substantial modern comforts and fine Berkeley service.
Among its other strengths is what was, for a long time, the only rooftop pool in London; it’s still the most pleasant, and shares space with a lovely rooftop bar. Spa treatments are handled next door at sister hotel The Emory; then it’s back to The Berkeley Café for afternoon tea accompanied by Cédric Grolet pastries, or dinner at the French Riviera–style La Môme London.
