here are a few grand hotels that stand somehow apart from all the trends that come and go in the hospitality world, and among them is the Bayerischer Hof Munich. This former royal palace became a hotel in 1841, and has been owned and operated by the Volkhardt family since 1897; its plans are quite literally measured in centuries.

Its location on the Old Town’s Promenadeplatz is a singular one, and while the first impression is of an establishment deeply rooted in history, a closer inspection reveals that the Bayerischer Hof happily incorporates contemporary elements as well. Many of its rooms and suites remain classic in their aesthetic, but certainly not all — designers Axel Vervoordt, Siegward Graf Pilati and Inés Gress each contribute a distinctly modern perspective, with results that rival some boutique hotels for style.

Underneath it all, of course, Bayerischer Hof is both exquisitely luxurious and functionally state-of-the-art. The Blue Spa offers a wide range of wellness offerings in a striking space designed by the late Andrée Putman, complete with a pool under a retractable glass roof. And the hotel’s restaurants and bars are quite literally too numerous to list; highlights include the flagship Atelier as well as the polynesian Trader Vic’s and a nightclub and piano bar that regularly hosts live jazz acts.
