The Penny Bun, an old country inn turned into an elegant but down-to-earth boutique hotel in the North Yorkshire village of Askwith, epitomizes the concept. The focus here is on gourmet food and drink — mostly locally sourced, the name a reference to a mushroom that grows in the woods nearby — and the social experience of enjoying it by the glow of candlelight. Fittingly, the inn’s five rooms are free of screens and all other manner of distractions; calm and low-lit with sustainably built furnishings, they’re intended mostly for resting. Walking trails and bucolic rural landscapes await just outside the front door.Room Count: 5 Rooms
