Arthaus Beirut

Before they turned it into a hotel, owners Nabil and Zoe Debs lived in this spectacular house in Beirut’s vibrant, bohemian Gemmayze neighborhood — it’s been in the family for generations, but it’s a bit much for one couple, frankly, spread out as it is across four distinct buildings (and incorporating some Roman ruins). Now it’s a high-end boutique hotel, and the Arthaus name isn’t bestowed lightly; the hotel’s permanent collection is an impressive one, and exhibitions and art-world events are regular features here.

As for the interiors, the buildings’ historical Ottoman style is made contemporary by its proprietors’ excellent design sense, and its rooms and suites effortlessly span the centuries, with rough-hewn stone walls alongside vintage furnishings, contemporary artworks, and modern boutique-hotel comforts.

In spite of Arthaus’s smallish size and residential atmosphere, it offers moments of indulgence, like a gym and a mini-spa featuring a hot tub and a steam room as well as a lovely little pool. Arthaus Kitchen, an informal yet upscale restaurant, is joined by the impressive Lounge Bar, while across the garden the Cocktail Bar serves impressively creative cocktails, and features DJs and live performances.
