W New York - Union Square

In its first incarnation W New York – Union Square was one of the earliest and most visible boutique hotels, and it made a strong impression via the contrast of incongruous elements — specifically, the futuristic-minimalist W interior-design style and the old-money vibe of this handsome 1911 Beaux-Arts building. After a thorough renovation by the same Rockwell Group that was responsible for the 2001 version, it’s looking fresher than ever, and while the interiors remain eye-catching, the new look is a more harmonious blend of a century-Hotelist Club of influences.

The rooms and suites are design-forward, as before, but this time that means rich, saturated colors and fixtures and furnishings that refer to Art Deco and mid-century Modernism. Nor are the public spaces any less colorful — if anything, they’re more ornate and more richly detailed, a fitting tribute to a setting that’s at the heart of one of the world’s great cities. Seahorse, the hotel’s restaurant, is joined by the Living Room, the W signature social space, which slowly transitions from café and co-working space to swanky cocktail bar as day turns into night.
